The Backhouse Flour Mill was built in 1798 by John Backhouse. The mill remained in continous use by the Backhouse family until 1955, when it was sold to the Big Creek Conservation Authority.

The family later changed their name to Backus. The water is supplied to the water wheel via a 30 meter long flume.

The mill has been under restoration and many of the internal workings are in excellent shape. The mill is powered by an overshot water wheel.

The mill is the centre piece of the Backus Heritage Conservation Area.

Directions:
Exit Highway 401 at interchange 232 and travel south on Oxford County Road 59 for 11 km. Turn right onto Oxford County Road 13 and travel south for 20 km to Provincal Highway 3. When you cross Highway 3, the road becomes County Road 59. Travel further south for a 27 km and turn left onto Concession Road 2. Drive for 2.5 km to the entrance to the Bachus Heritage Conservation Area. The mill is about a kilometre north of the entrance. There is a small entrance fee. |
